Northern Lights
Northern Norway is one of the best places in the world to see the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis. The Northern Lights appear only at high latitudes on dark nights from September to March. There are few phenomena that capture the imagination like the Aurora Borealis and lucky star-gazers can witness anything from an ethereal green glow on the horizon to pulsating scarlet streaks across the sky. The lights come at night when the sky is dark. It’s like a celestial ballet of light dancing across the night sky – one of the most spectacular sights in the world.
The great outdoors
The great outdoors is rarely greater than in Europe's big north. Epic expanses of wilderness – forests, lakes and volcanoes engaging with nature is a viscerally pleasurable experience. National parks cover the region, offering some of Europe's best hiking as well as anything from kayaking to glacier-walking to bear-watching. Spectacular coasts invite exploration from the sea, whether there be rugged fjords, cliffs teeming with seabirds or archipelagos.
Copenhagen
Copenhagen is one of Europe’s oldest and most popular cities and home of the world’s oldest monarchy, now with an Australian connection. It’s also one of the cleanest and most metropolitan. Visit Amalienborg Palace, home of the royal family since 1794, which is guarded by its own sentries and Rosenborg Castle, a 17th century castle that houses the crown jewels. See Radhus, (city hall), Kongens Nytorv, a square circled by gracious old buildings, including the Royal Theatre and Charlottenborg, a 17th century Dutch Baroque palace. Of course, a visit to this wonderful city would not be complete without a visit to the Little Mermaid and also to Nyhavn known for its old sailing ships. The dynamic Danish capital also features progressive modern architecture, the must-visit Tivoli Gardens amusement park and explore the canals and pretty narrow streets, appreciate beautiful old homes, and find great shopping and people watching on The Ströget.
